In Gaza, women and girls are fighting tirelessly for their lives and the survival of their families. The exhausted population of Gaza finds no respite from war and destruction. Food and essential supplies are basically gone, with increased risks of starvation and hunger. Over 1 million women and girls are at risk of starvation. Mothers often eat last and least, feeding their children and family first.

Pregnant women risk malnutrition for themselves and their fetuses. Nearly 17,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women in Gaza will need care for acute malnutrition. People have to fight over water and search through garbage for food. Hospitals will soon have no blood for transfusions or fuel to keep machines running.

With almost no access to sanitation, i.e. toilets, showers, menstrual protection etc., women and girls are exposed to infections. In displacement and in overcrowded camps, there are high risks for women and girls’ safety and exposure to violence, including sexual violence.

In difficult circumstances, UN Women continues to work together with local women’s organizations on the ground in Gaza. The focus is on delivering humanitarian support to the affected population. But more resources, capacity and funding are needed.
